From 1987 to 1992, Garrett was the starting quarterback for Princeton’s football team. In his college career, he completed 366 out of 550 passes for 4,274 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 1992, with the help of his father, at the time a member of the Dallas Cowboys scouting department, Garrett was signed as a free agent. He owns the Ivy League career completion rate record of 66.5 percent. On August 31, 1993, he was cut and then suited up for the team’s practice squad. Garrett is the son of former NFL player Jason Garrett and the grandfather of former head coach Jim Garrett. He received a degree in history in 1989 with a paper on “The Revolt of the Black Athlete as Initiated by Harry Edwards”
