In 1986, he began playing Andy Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties. Bonsall earned three Young Artist Awards for his role in the series. In 1990, he was nominated for a Young Artist Award for his lead part in the made-for-TV film Do You Know the Muffin Man. He made his feature film debut in 1992 with the horror film Mikey, in which he played the titular character, a demonic young kid who murders his parents and terrorizes his adoptive parents. The British Board of picture Classification initially allowed the picture uncut, but James Ferman revoked its classification following the Bulger murder.
Bonsall is most remembered for his role as Alexander Rozhenko, the son of Worf, the Klingon security officer from Star Trek: The Next Generation, which he played in seven episodes over multiple seasons. He portrayed Patrick Swayze’s son in the 1993 film Father Hood. In 1994, he starred in the Disney comedy Blank Check and appeared alongside Bob Saget in the TV comedy Father and Scout. His other acting credits include the television movie Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme, as well as cameo appearances on shows like The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Young Riders.He began his musical career by creating the rock band Late Bloomers with his buddies in 1998. He has played in the Boulder-based punk bands Thruster and The Light on Adam’s Stereo.
In 2016, Bonsall went on tour with the rock band The Ataris. That same year, he claimed to have been clean and sober since his 2010 arrest: “My drunken run-ins with the law are approximately a decade behind me, so I’m fairly glad about that. I’m not proud of my previous blunders, but you live and learn.” In October 2017, Bonsall married Courtney Tuck. Their son, Oliver, was born in August 2019. Bonsall is a current member of the band Sunset Silhouette.
