Wygant began her journalism career in 1948 at WBAP-TV. Her hiring happened two weeks before the station went live. She started out as a writer, writing copy for “commercials, show intros, and whatever else needed to be written.” Wygant has been with KXAS-TV for many years. Later, she worked in front of cameras, assisting program hosts. She got her own talk show, Dateline, in 1960 after filling in for the original host for a week while he was sick with the flu. On it, she interviewed a variety of guests. As a result, she was the first woman in the Southwest to host a general-interest talk show.
After a change in station ownership in 1975, she began working in the news department, particularly on Inside Area 5, which featured interviews and coverage of community events. She co-hosted the local component of The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon beginning in 1977. The National Broadcast Film Critics Association was founded by Wygant. Wygant has interviewed hundreds of celebrities during her television career. The Beatles, Madonna, Bob Hope, and Bette Davis are among them.
