Lange held a variety of jobs, including construction worker, bobsled race announcer, factory worker, taxi driver, bartender, and cowboy, among others. Lange went on to become a high school English teacher in northern New York State after graduating. He worked as an Outward Bound USA instructor upstate during the summers. Lange was the Dartmouth Outward Bound Center’s director. Following that, he worked as a general contractor in Hanover, New Hampshire for 35 years. Lange founded A Yankee Notebook, a syndicated newspaper column he writes that is distributed throughout New England, in 1981. He has also worked as a commentator for Vermont Public Radio and has hosted Windows to the Wild for 18 seasons.
Lange has read A Christmas Carol to a television audience every Christmas since 1975. He employs the original prompter script used by Charles Dickens during his tour of the United States in 1867-68. Lange first heard the version in 1953, while attending college, where it was traditionally performed in the chapel before students went home for Christmas break. Lange began performing it in his home, eventually moving it to St. Thomas Church in Hanover, New Hampshire, when the space became too small. Lange won a Boston/New England Emmy for “Outstanding Program Host” for his work on Windows to the Wild. Franklin Pierce University will present Lange with the Fitzwater Medallion for Leadership in Public Communication in 2021.
