Royo made his acting debut in 1998, playing a minor role in the film L.A. Without a Map. In 1999, he appeared in one episode of the television series Law & Order and Third Watch. Royo can also be seen sitting in the courtroom audience, immediately behind the defendant, in the Law & Order episode ‘Prince of Darkness’. In 2000, he played a minor role in John Singleton’s remake of the 1971 blaxploitation picture Shaft. He also acted in G, a 2002 film based on The Great Gatsby. Royo is best known for his portrayal as Reginald “Bubbles” Cousins, a drug addict and confidential informant who has been a frequent character on the HBO crime drama series The Wire from its first season.

Royo’s portrayal of this character was so convincing that, during on-location filming, he was approached by a Baltimore resident and offered a little packet of heroin, with the man telling the in-character Royo, “Man, you need this more than I do.” Royo dubbed this episode his “street Oscar.” In 2008, he appeared briefly in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as a soldier in a force transported back in time. That same year, he debuted as Stephen Canfield in the third season of the television series Heroes. Royo also appeared in the 2008 Criminal Minds season 4 episode “Catching Out” as a drug-addicted homeless serial killer.

Royo was in a panel discussion at Harvard University in October 2009, alongside fellow The Wire stars Sonja Sohn and Michael K. Williams. The panel explored The Wire’s usefulness as a media source that at-risk adolescents may relate to and acquire valuable life lessons from. Royo appeared as a guest star in the Starz original series Party Down in 2010. Later same year, he appeared as a cab driver in the third season opener, as well as the seventh and eighteenth episodes of the Fox television series Fringe. Royo played Santana Cordero in the NBC police drama Prime Suspect in 2012, when he was accused of murdering witnesses before his trial. He features in the 2012 picture, Red Tails.

He appears in the 2015 drama film Lila & Eve as Skaketti, with Jennifer Lopez and Viola Davis. Royo made his Agent Carter debut in 2015, playing Spider Raymond, the owner of the nightclub “La Martinique,” but he quickly gained notoriety as an illegal trader. He also starred in Showtime’s Happyish as Barry, a mutual acquaintance of the main characters Thom and Lee Payne. Royo played Mayor Robert “Bobo” Boston of San Vincente in the Amazon Prime series Hand of God. On Fox’s Empire, he portrayed Thirsty Rawlings, a shifty defense attorney.Royo received a Special Jury Award at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival for his performance in Hunter Gatherer. He co-stars with Octavia Spencer in the Apple TV+ series Truth Be Told as an attorney.
