Nawaz began her career at NBC in 2003, eventually moving on to Dateline NBC, where she worked on documentaries. She worked as a producer at NBC’s investigative unit and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Business & Financial Reporting in 2008. In 2009, Nawaz was awarded an International Reporting Project fellowship. She received a News & Documentary Emmy Award in 2010 for her work on the NBC News series Inside the Obama White House. Later, she worked as a correspondent and bureau head for NBC in Islamabad. Nawaz began working for ABC News in 2015. In 2016 and 2017, she was the anchor of US election and national politics coverage. Nawaz was also the host of the ABC podcast Uncomfortable. She began working for PBS in April of 2018.

Nawaz was a correspondent for the PBS NewsHour’s 2018 series The Plastic Problem, which won a Peabody Award in 2019. Nawaz co-moderated a Democratic Party presidential debate in December 2019, making her the first Asian American and Muslim to do so in the United States. Nawaz was named Chief Correspondent of the PBS NewsHour in June 2021. Since January 2023, Nawaz and Geoff Bennett have served as co-anchors of the PBS NewsHour, taking over for Judy Woodruff. Nawaz is also a member of the Inter-American Dialogue, a think institution situated in Washington, DC.
