Saeed began his career as a hip hop and electronic music music journalist. Among others, he has interviewed and profiled DJ Shadow, El-P, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Kid Koala, Freddie Gibbs, and Migos. From 2012 to 2014, he wrote a weekly online column called Weediquette and produced and hosted the first episode of the web series of the same name. His works include the James Beard Award-nominated series Bong Appétit, for which he also composed the theme song, as well as the Viceland limited series Vice Does America and the Webby Award-winning documentary Mad Honey. In 2017, Saeed stopped producing content for Vice Media in protest of allegations that Vice tolerated an abusive workplace culture and sexual harassment.
Saeed was honored by the Associated Press Television and Radio Association in 2019 for his investigative reporting for KCRW on Los Angeles’ “seshes,” or underground cannabis markets. Saeed is a current member of the band GOD$ and a former member of The Kominas and Sunny Ali & the Kid. He was a writer and actor on the HBO series High Maintenance, and he co-wrote a film for Fox Searchlight and New Regency with Ben Sinclair. Onyx Collective picked up Saeed’s pilot Deli Boys, starring Poorna Jagannathan and Iqbal Theba, in 2022. It was renewed for a second season in May 2023. Saeed is a supporter of cannabis legalization and education. His family is “pretty liberal and open-minded,” he says.
