Richard Roth CNN News
Roth is a CNN “original”—one of the network’s initial workers when it debuted in 1980. He has covered a wide range of issues over the previous 25 years, including the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the first Gulf War. Roth lived in Whitestone, Queens, during the early 1970s. He formerly worked as an AP Radio news anchor and reporter, as well as a producer for WPIX-TV in New York City, before joining CNN. Richard Roth appeared in Robert Wiener’s book, Live from Baghdad. He played a part in the 2002 HBO film of the same name, performed by actor Hamish Linklater.
The book and film both contain Roth’s brief involvement with Wiener’s crew in Baghdad, which was precipitated by the sudden evacuation of his fellow journalistic colleague Tom Murphy due to safety concerns. Roth was stationed in Amman before joining Wiener’s crew and left long before the Gulf War began, but during this period, he was part of a crucial broadcast in which the CNN team stepped into a chaotic US diplomatic mission in Baghdad and interviewed stranded US expatriate worker Robert Vinton. Roth’s interview with Vinton received considerable coverage in the United States and resulted in Bob Vinton’s disappearance by Iraqi authorities, though he was eventually released and permitted to return home.
