Lloyd worked as a senior producer for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Lateline News and current affairs show. He formerly worked as ABC’s South Asia reporter in New Delhi, where he reported on all ABC national and international radio and television news and current affairs programs. Lloyd has also worked as a presenter and program producer for the BBC, Sky News, and two Australian commercial television networks. Lloyd was scheduled to return to Australia in October 2008 to co-host ABC News Breakfast with Virginia Trioli on ABC2, but he was detained in Singapore on drug allegations. He served six months of a ten-month term in prison. Lloyd was re-hired by ABC for his current Lateline post in April 2010.
Lloyd returned to ABC in April 2010 as a senior journalist on Lateline. Inside Story, a book published in October 2010, chronicled his encounters with the Singaporean court system. Lloyd was nominated for two national prizes for his coverage of news and events in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. He was based in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2002 to mid-2006, covering the South East Asia region for the ABC. Lloyd was praised for his outstanding coverage of the Bali bombings in 2002 and 2005, as well as the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster in 2004.

Lloyd was arrested and accused of possessing 0.8 grams of methamphetamine (the drug ‘ice,’ one smoking pipe, and six syringes on July 18, 2008. According to Singaporean authorities, his urine tested positive for amphetamines, and he is being probed for drug trafficking. Lloyd was released on a S$60,000 bond, which was secured by his boyfriend Mohamed Mazlee bin Abdul Malik. Lloyd was charged with four lesser offenses after Singapore’s Attorney-General withdrew the more serious trafficking case against him in November 2008. Lloyd was sentenced to ten months in prison on December 2, 2008, after pleading guilty to three of the charges, and was released early on June 23, 2009, for good behavior.
