LaPook began an active practice in gastrointestinal and internal medicine at Columbia University in 1986. He went on to become a Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center. LaPook has done substantial work in the field of medical computers, including contributing to the development of an electronic medical textbook and designing a medical practice management software package that he sold in 1999 to a business that was eventually acquired by Emdeon Corporation, the parent company of WebMD. He is a published author who is passionate about teaching the public about health issues. LaPook is the originator of the NYU Langone Empathy Project, whose purpose is to improve the connection between health professionals and patients by developing a video curriculum that teaches empathy to doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

LaPook joined anchor Katie Couric’s “CBS Evening News” as Medical Correspondent in 2006. He was elected CBS News’ Chief Medical Correspondent in 2013, and he appears often on CBS Mornings, the “CBS Evening News,” CBS Radio, and CBS News Streaming. In an effort to provide insight and perspective on a wide range of health and medical topics, he has interviewed patients, healthcare providers, researchers, thought leaders, and government officials, including President Obama twice. LaPook established The Empathy Project at NYU Langone Medical Center in 2014, with the concept that good interpersonal interaction between patient and caregiver is crucial to providing quality medical treatment.
