Nick Clooney is an award-winning American journalist, anchorman, and television host who rose to prominence hosting ‘The Money Maze’ and ‘The Nick Clooney Show’. He is also the brother of American singer-actress Rosemary Clooney and the father of George Clooney, a well-known American actor, film director, producer, screenwriter, and philanthropist.

Clooney served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army and during such tenure Nick performed as a disc jockey in the American Forces Network while in Germany as also hosted the shows ‘Melody-Go-Round’ and ‘Music in the Air’. Clooney moved to California to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. When that effort failed, he relocated to Ohio. Clooney worked at Lexington, Kentucky’s WKYT-TV from 1958 to 1966. He later relocated to Ohio, where he began hosting his own local morning television show, ‘The Nick Clooney Show,’ for WLWC television in Columbus, Ohio, in 1968, which included a variety and talk-show format. The show debuted on WCPO-TV in Cincinnati in 1969. In the early 1970s, Nick rose to prominence with the show.
Clooney rose to national prominence when he hosted the ABC television game show ‘The Money Maze’ in December 1974. He hosted the show on WKRC-TV, Cincinnati’s then-ABC affiliate, alongside ‘The Nick Clooney Show,’ with WKRC scheduling ‘The Money Maze’ at 10:30 a.m., just before ‘The Nick Clooney Show’ at 11:00 a.m. However, the show faltered and was canceled on June 27, 1975, after which Nick became the news director and lead anchor of WKRC-TV. Nick rose to prominence as a journalist covering the 1977 Beverly Hills Supper Club fire and its aftermath for WKRC. The station canceled its Saturday night prime-time programming to cover the devastating fire that killed many people in the area.
Nick left WKRC in 1984 and relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he worked as a co-anchor at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. on KNBC. He later returned to WKRC-TV in the late 1980s, and after a brief stint there, he relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, to host the newly created evening news program on KSTU, a Fox-affiliated television station. He returned to WSAI in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1999 and began working as an afternoon host on September 13. In 1994, he worked as a news anchor for WGRZ-TV, an NBC affiliate in Buffalo, New York. He worked as a host and researcher for the cable channel American Movie Classics. While there, Nick collaborated with Bob Dorian to introduce and present classic movie backgrounds.
He hosted the Dayton Literary Peace Prize awards ceremony in 2007, and he did so again in 2008 and 2009. In the fall of 2008, he was named American University School of Communication and Newseum Distinguished Journalist in Residence at American University in Washington, D.C. He hosted the fifth annual AU School of Communication-Newseum Reel Journalism Film Festival, as well as other Newseum events. Meanwhile, he taught Opinion Writing in the fall of 2008 and a new course called ‘Films that Changed Us’ in the spring of 2009. It was based on his 2002 book ‘The Movies That Changed Us: Reflections on the Screen,’ which presents a unique catalog of iconic American films such as ‘The Birth of a Nation,’ ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ and ‘The Last of the Mohicans,’ among others.
On June 8, 2012, Nick appeared as the commencement speaker for the University of Cincinnati. The next day he was awarded an honorary degree. The George Clooney directed and starred blockbuster hit 2014 war film ‘The Monuments Men’ featured Nick in the older version of Lt. Frank Stokes, while the character’s younger version was played by George.
