In 1954, Rather began his full-time career as a reporter with ‘The Houston Chronicle,’ where he scripted newscasts, reported, and was involved in broadcasting. Later, he began hosting the ‘Coaches Show’ on KTRH, the University of Houston’s radio station. He joined KTRH as a news director in 1956 and later worked as a television reporter for KTRK-TV. He continued to provide ground reports as well as lead broadcasts. In 1960, he became the news director of KHOU, a CBS affiliate station. He became well-known for his coverage of Hurricane Carla (1961), so much so that CBS decided to incorporate him into their regular lineup. In 1962, CBS named Rather Bureau Chief of CBS News Southwest Bureau in Dallas.

CBS hired him as a White House Correspondent in 1964. In 1965, he relocated to London to become the Bureau Chief for CBS News. He made the decision to relocate to Vietnam to work as a war correspondent. Rather moved to Saigon, Vietnam, to cover the Vietnam War between 1965 and 1966. Later, he hosted the CBS News special ‘The Wall Within,’ in which he expressed and described the atrocities he witnessed in Vietnam. In 1966, he returned to CBS as a White House Correspondent, a position he held until 1974. He covered the Watergate investigation and Richard Nixon’s impeachment hearings during his second stint as White House Correspondent. In 1968, he began appearing on news programs such as ’60 Minutes,’ among others.

For nearly four decades, he worked as a correspondent, editor, and host of the show. His stories addressed social, political, and economic concerns. He took over as anchor of ‘CBS Evening News’ in 1981. He held this position until 2005. While anchoring the CBS Evening News, he was embroiled in several controversies involving his personal style and dramatic demeanor. However, his journalistic integrity was unaffected by the allegations. He was the host of ’48 Hours’ from 1988 to 2002. The program, inspired by the success of ’48 Hours on Crack Street,’ focuses on recording and filming events that occur within 48 hours. He worked as a correspondent and host for ’60 Minutes II’ from January 1999 to September 2005.

His tenure with CBS News came to an end on June 20, 2006, just months before his contract expired. He had been with CBS for approximately 44 years. In November 2006, he joined HDNET (now AXS TV) and began hosting the ‘Dan Rather Reports show. From 2006 to 2013, this one-hour newscast aired.
