She began modeling in 1975 after American photographer Peter Beard persuaded her to relocate to the United States. The following year, she landed her first modeling job with ‘Vogue’ magazine. Designers adored her exotic looks, and she served as a muse for Yves Saint Laurent, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, and many others. She left modeling in 1989, citing a lack of fulfillment. She refocused her efforts on business development and charitable work. She directed a documentary about her 1992 return to Somalia, and she has since been a vocal advocate for women’s rights in her home country and other third-world countries.

She founded her own makeup line, ‘Iman Cosmetics,’ in 1994, to produce cosmetics for ethnic skin. She has expanded her cosmetics sales from department stores to prestige and charity lines. She has appeared in a number of television and film roles. Her most notable roles were in the films ‘Out of Africa’ and ‘No Way Out’.
