Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is an American actor best known for his appearances in the superhero flicks Aquaman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and The Matrix Resurrections. He received a Primetime Emmy Award for his role as Cal Abar in HBO’s Watchmen. Abdul-Mateen has also appeared in Black Mirror and The Handmaid’s Tale.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen I (1945-2007), a Muslim father, and Mary, a Christian mother, gave birth to Abdul-Mateen in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the sixth of six children. He grew up in New Orleans’ Magnolia Projects before moving to Oakland, California, where he attended McClymonds High School. He was an athlete at McClymonds (he played against future NFL champion Marshawn Lynch) and a self-described geek who adored chess. He also served as prom king. After being priced out of Oakland, the family relocated to Stockton, California. Abdul-Mateen began investigating his family history after his father died in 2007. His father was of West Indian descent, although the country of origin is unknown.
Mateen, an Alpha Phi Alpha member and hurdler at the University of California, Berkeley, used theater studies to help him overcome his stutter. He earned a degree in architecture and worked as a city planner in San Francisco. He applied to theatrical schools after being laid off, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts, and working as a stage actor.
