Chau resided in Vietnam with her parents and two brothers. Chau’s mother was six months pregnant when the family joined the Vietnamese boat people fleeing their homeland in 1979. Chau’s father was shot and nearly died during their escape. On June 25, that year, Chau was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. A Vietnamese Catholic church in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, arranged for her family to be sponsored by a local Vietnamese family. Chau spoke Vietnamese as her first language as a child and then learned English in school. Her family lived in public housing and relied on subsidized lunch programs.
