Harper made his New York theatrical debut with the Vital Theatre Company’s 2006 production of Full Bloom, a play about teens coming to grips with their sexuality. In 2008, he appeared in the Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Lynn Nottage’s play Ruined, which received the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. From 2009 to 2011, he portrayed Danny Rebus on the PBS series The Electric Company. In 2010, he appeared in the Public Theater’s mobile unit production of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, and returned in 2011 for Titus Andronicus at the Anspacher Theatre. He played Marty Boy in Stew and Heidi Rodewald’s musical The Total Bent, which debuted at The Public Theater in 2012.

Harper made his Broadway debut in 2014, playing James Harrison with Stokely Carmichael in All the Way. He and Carrie Coon costarred in Melissa James Gibson’s Placebo, which premiered in 2015 at Playwrights Horizon Theater. Harper joined the cast of the NBC comedy The Good Place in 2016. Prior to obtaining the part of Chidi Anagonye, he considered leaving acting. Harper did not learn about the show’s true premise until after he had been cast. His performance has garnered significant acclaim. Between the first and second seasons of the show, he played a lead in Zoe Kazan’s After the Blast at Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theatre. In April 2020, it was revealed that he would narrate the Marvel audio book series Black Panther: Sins of the King, and in November 2020, that he would star in the second season of the HBO Max anthology series Love Life. Harper was announced in October 2022 to join the cast of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. The film was released in theaters on February 17, 2023.
