The title “The Golden One” is drawn from Thomas’ mother’s final remarks before her untimely death. Thomas and Clay Tatum co-directed the hour-long recording, with executive producers Bo Burnham, Christopher Storer, Olivia Gerke, Ravi Nandan, and Inman Young for A24. The program includes nine original songs written and sung by Thomas, followed by a rendition of Syn Twister’s “He’s Hot.” The accompanying album, Songs from the Golden One, was released in February 2020. Pitchfork gave the show a 7.7/10 rating, indicating positive reviews.

Stand-Up

Thomas first gained popularity as a solo stand-up comedian in 2015. Thomas’ Tom DeLonge impression, which is an integral element of his act, was featured on the Put Your Hands Together and You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes podcasts. In 2020, Thomas achieved even more viral success with “Big Baby” and its sequel, “Big Baby Christmas”. In these musical skits, Thomas sings nonsensical lyrics while an Instagram filter de-ages his face. They were created in response to Tom Papa’s #LiveFromHome challenge for quarantined comedians; Thomas was selected to take part by his friend Rory Scovel. Over one million people have viewed the ‘Big Baby’ music videos on YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram.

Thomas has also performed at Sketchfest, New York, and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals. Thomas performed as the opening act for Bo Burnham on his Make Happy tour in 2016. Burnham later executive produced Thomas’ autobiographical stand-up special, The Golden One, in 2020.
