Davis was born in St. Matthews, South Carolina, on August 11, 1965, to Mae Alice Davis (née Logan) and Dan Davis. Her grandmother’s property on the Singleton Plantation was where she was born. Her father trained horses, and her mother worked as a maid, factory worker, and housewife. She is the second youngest of six siblings (four sisters and one brother). Her parents relocated Davis and two of her elder siblings to Central Falls, Rhode Island, shortly after her birth, leaving her other siblings with her grandparents.

Davis, a former actress, has a history of adversity, having lived in rat-infested apartments. She went to Central Falls High School and participated in TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Student Support Services. Davis’ skill was spotted in West Warwick, Rhode Island’s Young People’s School for the Performing Arts. She attended Rhode Island College after high school and participated in the National Student Exchange. She spent four years at Juilliard, where she was a part of the Drama Division’s “Group 22” (1989-93).

Viola Davis The Woman King

She appeared as General Nanisca in the 2022 American historical action-adventure film The Woman King. General Nanisca, commander of the Agojie, liberated Dahomean women kidnapped by slavers from the Oyo Empire in 1823. As a result, King Ghezo prepares for war with the Oyo. Nanisca mentors a new generation of fighters, including Nawi, who becomes friends with veteran Agojie Izogie.

Nawi discovers that the Oyo are planning an attack and discovers her past. Nanisca assists Nawi in extracting a shark tooth from her shoulder, proving that she is her biological daughter. Although the Agojie beats the Oyo, Ghezo refuses to allow a rescue attempt for the captured Agojie. Nanisca kills Oba in a single battle after Nawi escapes. Ghezo privately admonishes Nanisca for disobeying him and crowns her the Woman King when the Agojie returns to Dahomey.

Davis also revealed in 2017 that she would write Corduroy Takes a Bow, the sequel to the iconic picture book Corduroy. In a news statement, Davis said that “Corduroy has always held a special place in my life, first as a child paging through it, and then again with my daughter, introducing her to the adventures of that adorable teddy bear”.
