White announced on April 1, 2022, to an outpouring of support, that he had died peacefully that morning. She spent the summer of 1980 in South Carolina with her dying mother, who had ovarian cancer. Although George was not a biological relative of hers, her mother grew up with his family, and he and his wife took her under their wing years later. She also stated that her children frequently attend Wheel of Fortune tapings.

When Wheel of Fortune hostess Susan Stafford left the show in October 1982, White was chosen as one of three replacement hostesses to co-host the show. White took over as the regular hostess on December 13, 1982.
White temporarily took over as MC for Wheel of Fortune beginning with the week of episodes scheduled to air beginning December 9, 2019. The announcement came after a taping day was postponed due to Sajak being hospitalized with a blocked intestine that required emergency surgery to clear. White hosted both the original taping and the rescheduled taping the following day.
During her shows’ hosting, guest letter activators were used; during the Secret Santa Holiday Giveaway, the weeks of December 9 and 16 featured Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. Following that, the show went on hiatus during Christmas week, followed by a week of previously taped “America’s Game” episodes hosted by Sajak, before White returned to host on January 6, 2020, for a final week, aided by a “special guest,” Pat Sajak’s daughter Maggie. Sajak returned to the show on December 5, 2019, fully recovered from his surgery, with episodes to begin airing on January 13, 2020.
Sajak and White have hosted Celebrity Wheel of Fortune on ABC since 2021. Later that year, it was announced that Sajak and White had agreed to continue hosting Wheel of Fortune through the 2023-24 season.
