When Troy was sixteen years old, he was performing in Austin nightclubs after receiving his first guitar for Christmas at the age of thirteen. At the age of 18, he embarked on his first tour with Dino Lee in 1985. Later, he co-founded the critically acclaimed underground punk rock group BAND FROM HELL, but they were never signed to a record label. He was a founding member of the Rolling Stones and Faces-inspired roots rock group Del Dragons in 1992. The band toured the US and Europe as “Troy Dillinger & Del Dragons” through 1999 before disbanding soon after its first full-length release in 1997. He started playing as Troy Dillinger towards the end of 1999, with Hunt Sales, Ian McLagan, and other musicians filling in on a rotating basis.
He won awards from the Austin Music Network and The Austin Chronicle for his award-winning Dirty & Harry CD/DVD full-length recording and film festival in 2005. The same year, he founded Austin Swim, an adult swim viewing party that spawned Adult Swim Presents. Dillinger left Adult Swim in 2008 to launch The Austin Variety Show, a local television show that features Austin music, comedy, burlesque, and a live game show with audience members. From 2010 to 2013, the show aired on KBVO (TV) before moving to the internet.
