Tom Berenger is an actor from the United States. In Platoon (1986), he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the ruthless Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes. He is also known for his roles as Jake Taylor in Major League and Thomas Beckett in Sniper. He also appeared in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), The Dogs of War (1980), The Big Chill (1983), Eddie and the Cruisers (1983), Betrayed (1988), and other films.

He worked in regional theater before becoming a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1972. In 1973, he relocated to New York. Moore chose “Berenger” as his professional name after being forced to change his surname due to an existing “Tom Moore” in the Actors’ Equity Association. Berenger appeared in soap operas, including One Life to Live, where he played lawyer Tim Siegel. Rush It (1976), an independent film, marked his feature film debut. In 1977, he played the killer of the lead character (played by Diane Keaton) in the film Looking for Mr. Goodbar, which was based on the murder of schoolteacher Roseann Quinn.
In the 1980s, Berenger appeared in a number of significant films, including The Big Chill (1983), Eddie and the Cruisers (1983), Rustlers’ Rhapsody (1985), Platoon (1986), Someone to Watch Over Me (1987), Shoot to Kill (1988), and Major League (1989). In 1988, he established the Tom Berenger Acting Scholarship Fund to honor theatre students who excel in performance. Berenger has maintained an active acting career in film and television in recent years, albeit often in supporting roles. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series” for his role as Rebecca Howe’s blue collar-plumber love interest on Cheers during its final season. In the 1990s, he also began a career as a producer. Berenger co-produced the 1997 miniseries Rough Riders, in which he also played Theodore Roosevelt. Breaking Point, a dramatic thriller starring Berenger, Armand Assante, and Busta Rhymes, had a limited release beginning in December 2009. Berenger co-starred in the 2010 science fiction thriller Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio and Cillian Murphy as a business executive who mentored and worked with Murphy’s character’s father. It was his first major film role since 2001’s Training Day. In 2012, he played Jim Vance in the TV miniseries Hatfields & McCoys.
