In October 2017, actress Alyssa Milano encouraged women to use the hashtag #MeToo if they had experienced sexual harassment or assault. “I was just made aware of an earlier #MeToo movement, and the origin story is equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring,” Milano wrote on Twitter. Burke has been a vocal supporter of the #MeToo movement.
Time named Burke, along with a group of other prominent activist women dubbed “the silence breakers,” as the 2017 Time Person of the Year. In February 2018, she spoke about the origins of the movement at Brown University and at Calvary Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh.

Burke, an activist since 1989, moved to Selma, Alabama, in the late 1990s after finishing college. Burke founded the nonprofit “Just Be” in 2003 after working with survivors of sexual violence. It was an all-girls program for Black girls aged 12 to 18. Burke founded the Me Too movement in 2006 and began using the phrase “Me Too” to raise awareness of the prevalence of sexual abuse and assault in society.
She relocated to Philadelphia in 2008 and began working at Art Sanctuary Philadelphia and other non-profits. She worked as a consultant on the 2014 film Selma, which is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by James Bevel, Hosea Williams, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Lewis.
Following the use of the hashtag #MeToo in 2017 in response to the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse allegations, the phrase “Me Too” grew into a larger movement. She was a guest of American actor Michelle Williams at the 75th Golden Globe Awards in 2018. Burke was awarded the 2018 Ridenhour Prize for Courage, which is given to individuals who demonstrate courageous defense of the public interest and a passionate commitment to social justice, for popularizing the phrase “me too” as a way to empathize with sexual assault survivors.
Burke currently works as the Senior Director of Girls for Gender Equity. Burke organizes workshops to help improve policies in schools, workplaces, and places of worship, and she focuses on assisting victims in avoiding self-blame for sexual violence. Burke travels the country attending public speaking events. Burke and Mervyn Marcano of Field/House Productions recently signed an overall deal with CBS Studios.
