She was crowned Miss Universe in 1993 and earned the right to represent Puerto Rico. She competed in the Miss International pageant in 1992 and advanced to the semifinals. She came in second place at the Queen of the World competition that same year.

In the Miss Universe competition held in Mexico in May 1993, Torres took home the title. The fact that Torres had turned 18 months prior to the competition, despite claims to the contrary, raised some controversy following her victory in the pageant.
