Orman moved to Berkeley, California, after finishing high school and working as a waitress. She borrowed $52,000 from friends to start a restaurant in 1980. According to Orman, as an inexperienced investor, she put her money with a Merrill Lynch agent, who soon lost her whole investment in trading options. Later, Orman worked for Merrill Lynch as an account executive, where she discovered that the type of investment her broker had placed her in was not ideal for her needs, as options trading is a high-risk, high-reward trade reserved for high-net-worth persons.
Orman further claims that she was told that her broker’s conduct was unregulated because he was the highest-producing representative in the business. She stayed at Merrill Lynch after finishing her training until 1983 when she resigned to join Prudential Bache Securities as a vice president of investments.
Orman left Prudential in 1987 and established the Suze Orman Financial Group in Emeryville, California. While she was there, she created The Facts on Single Premium Whole Life, a pamphlet that compared single-premium whole life, universal life, and single-premium deferred annuities, and she gave away copies to anybody who asked for one. She was the firm’s director until 1997.
For O, The Oprah Magazine, Orman authored a financial counseling column. She used to write for Yahoo”Money !’s Matters” and now contributes to Costco Connection Magazine. She has written for publications such as The Philadelphia Inquirer, Lowes MoneyWorks, and Your Business at Home.
