Steve Somers Career

Somers began his career in the San Francisco Bay Area. He worked at KYA radio in San Francisco before graduating from high school, delivering on-air high school sports reports. Somers began hosting a news talk show on KNEW radio in Oakland after graduating from college. To that end, Time Magazine published an article naming him the country’s youngest talk show host at the time. Somers also worked as a public address announcer for the San Francisco Warriors of the NBA. Somers joined KPIX in San Francisco as a weekend sports anchor in 1970 and was honored by the San Francisco Press Club. Over the next decade and a half, he worked as a sportscaster for KOVR in Sacramento, WXIA-TV in Atlanta, and KNBC in Los Angeles.

Somers joined WFAN when it first broadcast in July 1987. He began his career at the station as the overnight host. He dubbed himself “Captain Midnight” while on the overnight program. During this time, he conducted one of the last interviews ever conducted with Mark Koenig, the last living member of the 1927 New York Yankees. Later, while co-hosting the 10am-1pm slot with WWOR-TV sports anchor Russ Salzberg, Somers developed some of the quirks that have become synonymous with his WFAN tenure, such as dropping catchphrases. He is also known to refer to the New York Mets as “The New York Metropolitans,” drawing out the parts as Metro-Politans and the Islanders as “The Ice-landers.”

Somers currently works in the evenings on weekdays. His show can be heard from 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., depending on whether WFAN broadcasts a sporting event that night. On weekends, he can also be heard. He is also known as “The Schmoozer.” “Sometimes, just sometimes,” Somers said of the irregular scheduling, “I forget what time zone I live in.” Somers stated in October 2021 that WFAN’s owner, Audacy had requested that his show be moved back into the overnight hours, which Somers declined because he was no longer willing to work a graveyard slot. He stated that, as a result of the request, he intended to retire from his regular shift at WFAN “sooner rather than later,” with the intention of continuing to work at WFAN.
