When he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Education in 1992, he became the city’s youngest public official ever. He eventually became president of the Board of Education. Democracy in Color is a political media group dedicated to political strategy and analysis at the confluence of race and politics. Phillips established Democracy in Color in 2016. He is the host of the “Democracy in Color with Steve Phillips” podcast. In 2016, Democracy in Color hosted the first-ever panel on women of color in politics at the Democratic National Convention. In January 2017, Democracy in Color presented the only DNC chair candidates’ discussion on race and diversity.

Phillips co-authored the first-ever audit of Democratic Party expenditures in 2014, and Campaigns and Elections magazine named him one of “America’s Top 50 Influencers” that year. Brown Is the New White debuted on the New York Times and Washington Post bestseller lists in March and February, respectively. His book, How We Win the Civil War: Securing a Multiracial Democracy and Ending White Supremacy for Good, was published by New Press in October 2022. Phillips started racing in marathons in San Francisco in 2008 and has since finished 20 of them.
