Matthews is the third son of landowner and entrepreneur David Matthews, who married Rhodesian-born artist Jane Spencer Parker in his second marriage. His mother attended the Slade School of Art. He is named after his maternal grandpa, architect Robert Spencer Parker. He has an older half-sister, Nina, and two older brothers, James and Michael, the latter of whom died in 1999 while climbing Mount Everest at the age of 22. He attended Eton College for his education.
Matthews studied Cinema and Television at the University of Southern California, intending to become an artist; he dropped out after nine months.

Matthews rose to prominence after appearing on the E4 “constructed reality” show Made in Chelsea. Matthews collaborated with his wife on their own E4 show Spencer, Vogue, and Baby Too in 2019. The show has been renewed for a second season.
Matthews has starred in a CBeebies 2019 marketing campaign and has collaborated with the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board. With his family’s permission, Matthews set off on a voyage to Mount Everest in search of his brother Michael’s remains. The adventure was documented in the documentary Finding Michael, which will appear on Disney+ in 2023.
He had been asked to quit the fifteenth series of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! the previous year due to his use of steroid tablets while competing in the series.
