Long received a BBC scholarship, the first endowed in memory of the late Jill Dando, to study broadcast journalism at Falmouth College of Arts. She worked for Spotlight and BBC Radio Cornwall after graduating before joining the BBC’s News Training Scheme and working for BBC Radio Shropshire and BBC Hereford and Worcester. Long went on to become the primary presenter on Spotlight after working as a news presenter for Midlands Today’s breakfast and lunchtime shows.
