Garfinkel’s early research focused on optical storage. Garfinkel created CDFS, the first file system for write-once optical disc devices, while an undergraduate at the MIT Media Laboratory. During the summer of 1987, he worked at Brown University’s IRIS Project, where he created a server that allowed many workstations to share CDROMs over a network at the same time. Garfinkel designed SBook, an address book program for the NeXT Computer, in 1991 while working as a senior editor at NeXTWORLD magazine. One of the most popular features of SBook was a search box that did a full-text search of all address book records with each key press. Many computer programs, including Apple’s Mail application, now support this type of search.
Garfinkel relocated to Martha’s Vineyard in 1995 and founded Vineyard.NET, the Vineyard’s first Internet Service Provider. Vineyard.NET was purchased in 2000 by Broadband2Wireless, a wireless ISP. Vineyard.NET was purchased from the debtor’s estate after the company declared bankruptcy in September 2001. Garfinkel started Sandstorm Enterprises, a computer security firm that created powerful computer forensic tools used to audit systems by organizations and agencies. Niksun purchased Sandstorm. Garfinkel holds six patents, the most of which are in the field of computer security. Garfinkel and Abhi Shelat published an article in IEEE Security & Privacy magazine in 2003 detailing an experiment in which they obtained 158 secondhand hard discs from various sources and investigated to see if they still contained readable data.
Cross-drive analysis, an unsupervised machine learning approach for autonomously rebuilding social networks from hard drives and other types of data-carrying devices that are likely to include pseudo-unique information, was introduced by Garfinkel in 2006. Garfinkel began working as an associate professor of computer science at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California, in September 2006. In June 2010, he relocated to Arlington, Virginia, to assist NPS with its research goals in the National Capital Region. In January 2015, he joined the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and in 2017, he joined the US Census Bureau. The use of the scientific method in digital forensics is a recurring theme in Garfinkel’s research.
