On February 10, 2017, Somara spoke at the United Nations regarding women and girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Somara started her first podcast, “Scilence,” on International Women in Engineering Day in June 2018, to provide a venue for women to talk anonymously about their experiences in STEM and what it’s like to work in an industry dominated by men. “Scilence” later evolved into “Innervation,” another podcast that addresses common difficulties that prevent many women from realizing their greatest potential.

In 2011, Somara began her career as a broadcaster when she appeared as a presenter on the BBC’s The Health Show, where she covered developments in global health. She began hosting No Kitchen Required later that same year, which aired on BBC America in 2012. The show featured three professional chefs attempting to cook using unfamiliar tribal techniques while immersed in alternative culture with tribes. Trips to Fiji, New Zealand, Thailand, and Dominica were part of the first season.
