Warren was cast as Ray Charles’ mother, Aretha Robinson, in the film Ray. Taylor Hackford, the film’s director, had seen Warren play in a theatrical production and invited her to audition for the role. She was the only actress considered for the role, and she won it. Warren revealed that she based her character Aretha on her grandmother. She received an NAACP Image Award nomination for the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
