He studied architecture at Yale University before leaving in 1997 to teach high school in the small village of Shimanyiro, Kenya. While there, he assisted in securing United Nations funding to complete the construction of a school and began filming the documentary Building Shimanyiro. Gordon returned to Yale and taught himself how to use an Avid editing machine to edit his footage. Later, he assisted in the production of Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck’s Dixie Chicks documentary Shut Up & Sing[, and after working as a cinematographer, editor, and producer on a variety of films, he rose to prominence with his documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.
Gordon directed the online film “GagaVille” for the game company Zynga in 2010. Breaking In, a Fox television series, he co-created and executive produces. He directed the 2011 comedy Horrible Bosses but declined to direct the sequel in August 2013, citing commitments to the television series The Goldbergs, on which he serves as an executive producer, and a planned remake of the film WarGames. Gordon directed the Amazon Studios pilot Sneaky Pete, which he also co-produced with Bryan Cranston and David Shore. Amazon Studios has ordered a season of episodes, which is currently in production. Gordon directed the 2017 Baywatch film, which starred Dwayne Johnson, Priyanka Chopra, and Zac Efron.
Gordon created and directed H*Commerce: The Business of Hacking You, a video series focusing on the threat posed by cybercrime to Internet users, which was sponsored by antivirus software company McAfee in 2009. Gordon has directed music videos, commercials, and episodes of Modern Family and Community, as well as two episodes of The Office and several episodes of Parks and Recreation.
