Sasheer Zamata is an American actress and stand-up comedian most recognized for her role as a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live from 2014 to 2017.

She is 38 years old as of 6 May 2024. She was born in 1986 in Okinawa, Japan. Her real name is Sasheer Zamata Moore.

Family – Education

Zamata is the daughter of US Air Force lieutenant colonel Henry Moore and Ivory Steward, who are both Americans. The military career of her father caused her to be born in Okinawa, Japan. She is the great-granddaughter of Leroy Washington Mahon, the man who established the town of Fargo, Arkansas, and was originally enslaved.

She graduated from Pike High School. She claims that her parents named her after the “Sahsheer” alien flower-like crystal from the Star Trek episode “By Any Other Name”. She attended the University of Virginia and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.Zamata was a founder member of the university’s long-form improv comedy ensemble, Amuse Bouche.

Saturday Night Live

During the 39th season of Saturday Night Live (SNL) on NBC, Zamata became a cast member in 2014. She became a cast member of Saturday Night Live during a season that had been criticized by black comedians and TV critics for lacking ethnic diversity (more specifically, for not hiring any black female cast members at the beginning of the new season and for having only five of them in the nearly 40 years the show has been on the air). Zamata was the first multiracial Maya Rudolph cast member to leave Saturday Night Live in the middle of the show’s 33rd season in 2007.

In the Drake-hosted episode of Saturday Night Live on January 18, 2014, Zamata made her SNL debut as a featured player, mimicking Rihanna. She was elevated to repertory player in the first episode of Season 41. Among her recurring roles are Keeley, a competitor on Black Jeopardy!, an African-American-focused version of Jeopardy!, and Janelle, a young girl who hosts the YouTube channel How 2 Dance with Janelle but is ignorant of how her emerging sexuality is coming across to viewers. The aforementioned Rihanna, Michelle Obama, Kerry Washington, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Solange Knowles, Diana Ross, Lupita Nyong’o, and Taraji P. Henson are just a few of the celebrities she has impersonated. Following the season 42 finale, she departed the program in 2017.

Career

Since 2009, Zamata has given frequent performances at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. Would You Fall for That, an ABC News covert camera series, starring her with. and participated in the Hey Girl cast on MTV. Additionally, Zamata made appearances in comedy on Inside Amy Schumer and Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell. Pursuit of Sexiness is a webseries in which she stars. She has also made appearances in CollegeHumor sketches.

Zamata’s YouTube account has videos including celebrity impersonations, including Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Tyra Banks, Michelle Obama, and Rihanna. In the zombie mode of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Zamata also provides the voice of Sally. Zamata provided the voice of Mary in the Muppets Haunted Mansion in 2021. Together with Nicole Byer, a fellow comic and best friend, she co-hosts the podcast Best Friends.

Zamata was selected a celebrity ambassador to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 2015, and began work with the Women’s Rights Project. The ACLU Women’s Rights initiative attempts to break down gender biases and “ensure equal economic opportunities, educational equity, and an end to gender-based violence”. She has raised awareness of gender inequality in the United States and pushed specifically for equal rights for women of color.

Zamata talked candidly about her experiences with colorism and discrimination in an interview with Allure. Despite the prejudices she has faced because of her darker skin tone, she has said she aims to use her experiences to inspire body positivity and self-acceptance among women of all skin tones.
