She departed The Patriot-News in November 2012 to become a full-time CNN correspondent. Ganim reported for CNN on January 8, 2014, that certain student-athletes at NCAA Division I member colleges and institutions read at the third-grade level or lower. The article focused on numerous different colleges, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), attributing the UNC information to the findings of Mary Willingham, a learning specialist who worked at the university. The University of North Carolina later stated that the study was “severely flawed.” The NCAA also questioned Ganim’s description of collegiate athletes’ academic qualifications in the piece, claiming that “the hard facts and cold truth simply do not bear out the scenario portrayed in [her] reporting.”

On April 11, 2014, UNC released independent expert assessments refuting Willingham’s assertions, saying that “[a] recent CNN articled stated, “60% [of UNC athletes] read between fourth- and eighth-grade levels.” Between 8% and 10% of the population reads at or below the third grade level.” Instead of 60% of UNC student-athletes reading at the 4th to 8th grade level, only 6% of student-athletes read at that level.” In May 2014, a New York Times columnist mentioned the CNN piece when recounting Willingham’s story as a whistleblower. The news prompted UNC to request a seventh assessment of the UNC controversy, led by veteran federal prosecutor Ken Wainstein, who discovered that UNC had suppressed an academic problem.
