She has contributed to award-winning coverage of some of the world’s most important stories, including 9/11, the 2003 Blackout, the end of apartheid in South Africa, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and AIDS.
From 1975 to 1978, she worked at WSB-AM radio. She worked in television from 1978 to 1982 at WXIA-TV, 1982 to 1983 at CNN, and 1983 to 1986 at KRON-TV. Abrams was named to the Editorial Advisory Board of “Making Waves,” a new quarterly publication of American women in radio and television, in December 2003. She is currently the co-chair of the New York Women’s Agenda program NY READS TOGETHER.
Prior to joining WCBS-TV in 2004, Abrams worked for WABC-TV for 18 years, beginning in February 1986 as a general reporter and later as the 5 p.m. co-anchor. Abrams’ long association with the station began with the quick move. Diana Williams was her last partner at WABC-TV, beginning in 2003. WCBS-TV offered her a contract to anchor CBS 2 News at 5 and 11 a.m. in 2003.
On April 19, 2004, Abrams joined WCBS-TV as the co-anchor of “CBS2 News” at 5 and 11 p.m. She was first paired with veteran New York news anchor Ernie Anastos, with whom she had co-anchored WABC Eyewitness News in the 1980s, and then with Jim Rosenfield. She was moved from 11 p.m. to noon in April 2006, co-anchoring with Mary Calvi. At 11 p.m., Abrams was replaced by veteran Dana Tyler. However, Abrams left the show in November 2006, when WCBS-TV sports anchor Chris Wragge and newly hired Kristine Johnson took over at noon and 5 p.m. Ms. Abrams was last reported to be “currently sitting out her contract – and collecting what’s believed to be roughly $6 million that’s due to her,” according to the New York Post.
