Canada began his career as a television news reporter at WBAL-TV in 1971 after finishing the Michele Clark broadcast journalism program at Columbia University and working under producer Fred Friendly. He began his three-year tenure at WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C. in 1974. Canada was nominated twice for Regional Emmy Awards for his work in the nation’s capital, and he won in 1977. He won an A.P. Award for Outstanding Reporting the following year. In 1978, he began his acting career. He worked part-time as a broadcaster for The Voice of America (US Information Agency) while transitioning careers.
He studied acting at The Folger Theatre Group with Franchelle Stewart Dorn. In 1985, he relocated from Washington, D.C. to New York. Shortly after, he became the second actor to play ‘Troy Maxson’ in August Wilson’s Fences at Rochester’s GeVa Theatre in January 1986. Canada has had a long career in both television and film, best known for his roles in Cinderella Man, Wedding Crashers, and The West Wing as Under Secretary of State Ted Barrow. Ron received the Dallas Film Critics Award and widespread national attention in 1996 for his role as “Otis Payne” in John Sayles’ film Lone Star.
At the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., he played Iago in a “photo negative” version of Shakespeare’s Othello. Other notable stage credits include Emmet Tate in Zooman and The Sign at New York’s Signature Theatre and originating the role of Duncan Troy in Headstrong at The Ensemble Studio Theatre, for which he was nominated for an Audelco Award for Best Supporting Actor. Off Broadway – In Old Age – as Azell Abernathy at New York Theatre Workshop in New York City Network is a Broadway play starring Bryan Cranston, Tony Goldwyn, and Tatiana Maslany.
