He previously hosted several CNN news programs, including The World Today and The Brief, before resigning following a series of contentious Twitter exchanges with other users. Clancy worked as a CNN international correspondent in Beirut, Frankfurt, Rome, and London from 1982 to 1996. During this time, he received the George Polk Award for his coverage of the Rwandan genocide, the DuPont-Columbia Award for his coverage of the Bosnian war, an Emmy Award for his coverage of the Somali famine and international intervention, and the A.H. Boerma Award for his coverage of global food and hunger issues.
Clancy joined CNN as a national correspondent in 1981, following a successful career in local radio and television in Denver, Colorado and San Francisco, California. Clancy was a contributor to CNN’s Emmy Award-winning coverage of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s resignation in 2012. CNN received two Emmys in 2012, one for “Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story” and the other for “Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story.”Clancy made a series of tweets about Israel and the Charlie Hebdo shooting in January 2015.
