Maffia’s professional acting career began with off-Broadway and off-Off-Broadway plays. She starred as Carmen in Ron Howard’s 1994 film The Paper. She was soon cast in the television series Chicago Hope. Maffia’s television career continued with four seasons on Profiler as Grace Alvarez, the forensic pathologist for the Violent Crimes Task Force. She has appeared in ER, The West Wing, and Law & Order as a guest star or as a recurring character. One of her most well-known roles was as Seattle attorney Catherine Alvarez in the 1994 film Disclosure, starring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore. She then appeared in several episodes of Law & Order as Vanessa Galiano and as Judge Victoria Peyton on Boston Legal.
Maffia starred as Liz Cruz, the anesthesiologist colleague of two dysfunctional plastic surgeons, on the FX Network series Nip/Tuck from 2003 until 2010. Maffia and Julian McMahon also collaborated on the television show Profiler. Maffia graduated from St. Michael Academy in 1973. Maffia appeared as a minor character in Pretty Little Liars from season 4 to season 7.
