Chandler was a television news correspondent and public relations consultant prior to entering politics. He was elected to Washington’s House of Representatives in 1974. In 1982, he was elected as a Republican to the 98th Congress, representing the newly formed 8th district. In the race, he defeated In 1982, he was elected by a margin of 57% to 43% over Democratic challenger Beth Bland. He served five terms before resigning to run unsuccessfully for the United States Senate. Chandler declared publicly in 1989 that he is a recovering alcoholic. Chandler taught Advanced Placement Government classes at Eaglecrest High School in Centennial, Colorado, until the end of the 2006-07 academic year.

One of Washington’s US Senate seats became vacant in 1992 when the incumbent, Brock Adams, announced his resignation after a personal scandal. Democratic state Senator Patty Murray won the Democratic primary and will face Chandler in the general election. Chandler appeared to have the upper hand for much of the contest, but during a debate late in the campaign, he bizarrely responded to Murray’s criticism for spending $120,000 on congressional mailings amid an economic downturn by paraphrasing the Roger Miller song “Dang Me”. Chandler was also harmed by incumbent President George H. W. Bush’s unpopularity in the Pacific Northwest, where he was mainly blamed for the recession.

Chandler supports Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 US presidential election, hoping to prevent President Donald Trump from being re-elected. Chandler was one of 12 former Republican U.S. Representatives who filed an amicus brief in Trump v. Anderson, supporting the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to prohibit former President Donald Trump from running in the 2024 presidential election.
