At the age of 23, Kovacik became the youngest anchor in New York City for NIGHTWORLD at Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) primary member station WNET. He moved to Los Angeles in 1994 to work as an anchor and reporter for KCOP-TV. In 2001, Kovacik left KCOP to become the West Coast correspondent, anchor, and bureau chief for the newly formed National Geographic Channel and its nightly news show, National Geographic Today. In 2004, Kovacik joined KNBC-TV. In 2006, a murder suspect chose to surrender to him live on-air, earning him a Golden Mike Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award.

He was on location in 2007 when he was hit by a police squad car carrying Paris Hilton. In 2008, he made international headlines again after an altercation between then-LAPD Police Chief William Bratton and LA City Councilman Dennis Zine occurred while Kovacik was reporting for Today in LA. His exclusive investigation into the Los Angeles Fire Department’s 911 response times prompted the Mayor to demand that the LAFD be audited. His reporting on the investigation into President Clinton’s impeachment was included in the Kenneth Starr Report (Starr Report), and his ground-breaking expose on overcrowded Los Angeles animal shelters compelled the city to change its policies.

Kovacik also won Emmys for his coverage of the Olympics, the Papal Conclave in Italy, and the Orlando mass shooting. Kovacik was elected by his peers to serve as President of the Los Angeles Press Club for three consecutive terms.

After his term expired, Kovacik was named an Honorary Board member of the Los Angeles Press Club, with the title President Emeritus. Kovacik is also a three-time recipient of the Humane Society of the United States’ Genesis Award, which recognizes the best media coverage of animal protection issues.
