Robert Baril Biography

Robert Baril hosts radio talk shows and performs stand-up comedy. Sex and Politics and TMI, his two albums on Stand Up! Records, were both produced by Grammy winner Dan Schlissel. He was the host of Minneapolis’s AM950 program Laughing Matters.

He is 38 years old as of 2023. Baril was born in 1986 in Roseau, Minnesota and raised in the nearby town of Warroad.

He graduated from Bemidji State University with a degree in political science and philosophy.

He moved to Minneapolis in 2009. Much of Baril’s stand-up comedy is informed by his political independence; his style draws inspiration from political comedians Dennis Miller, Colin Quinn, and Jon Stewart, as well as Garry Shandling and Carol Burnett. A reviewer for the Minneapolis newspaper City Edition called it “a social analysis and commentary that is as funny as it is entertaining.”  In that time, he has also branched out into more advanced work, such as his relationship with a woman who has a granddaughter that makes him “like a step-grandmother.” From 2015 to 2019, he hosted the Laughing Matters forum on AM 950 KTNF radio station in Minneapolis. He is a regular contributor to the political podcast Filter Free America. He is also one half of the sketch duo Les Tarriers, with Twin Cities actor Mike Lester. He released two albums: Sex and Politics and TMI. Growler’s Patrick Strait praised TMI’s balance between personal and political subject matter, calling Baril “an artist who has found his voice.”
