He worked for ESPN, ABC News, and NBC Sports as a senior executive and on-air journalist. In 2020, he launched Persona, a digital video interview platform. He has also been the Chairman of the Board of the Connecticut Lottery Corporation since 2020 (after being appointed by Gov. Ned Lamont). Simmelkjaer was named CEO of the New York Road Runners in December 2022. Simmelkjaer was named Senior Vice President, NBC Sports Ventures on September 12, 2011, and is responsible for leading international business development for the NBC Sports Group, which includes Golf Channel, NBC Sports, NBC Sports Radio, and other businesses, as well as overseeing the Group’s stake in Universal Sports. He is also in charge of the NBC Sports Ventures unit, which is a collection of NBC-owned businesses.
Simmelkjaer was previously the Vice President of International Development and Corporate Projects at ESPN. Simmelkjaer oversaw all international development and corporate projects for the network, which included ESPN’s international television channels, radio stations, and publishing interests. Simmelkjaer was also in charge of the network’s interactions with the International Olympic Committee. Simmelkjaer was the Assistant to the President at ESPN from 2003 to 2006. In that capacity, he assisted George Bodenheimer with strategic planning and management. Simmelkjaer joined ESPN as the director of programming and acquisitions in 2002. He was the primary figure responsible for the launch of a six-year programming agreement between ESPN/ABC and the NBA in that capacity.
From December 2005 to July 2007, Simmelkjaer was an anchor and correspondent for ABC News Now, hosting original programs such as Inside the Newsroom, In the Mix, and Guilt or Innocence. In 2007, Simmelkjaer returned to ESPN as a sideline reporter for ESPN College Football during the 2007 college football season. Simmelkjaer hosted MSNBC’s coverage of the Summer Olympics in 2012 and 2016. In July 2021, Simmelkjaer began working as a part-time studio host for Tennis Channel’s TC Live. Prior to joining ESPN, Simmelkjaer worked as an attorney at two New York firms: Weil, Gotshal & Manges from 2000 to 2001, and Cravath, Swaine & Moore from 1997 to 2000.
