From 1987 to 1989, Syler worked as a weekend reporter at KTVN-TV in Reno, Nevada, before moving on to become a weekend anchor at KOLO-TV. In 1990, she relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, to work as a weekend anchor for WVTM-TV. She began working as a morning and noon anchor at WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas, in 1992. She was the news anchor at KTVT, a CBS-owned station in Dallas, from 1997 to 2002. Syler co-hosted CBS News’ The Early Show with Harry Smith, Hannah Storm, and Julie Chen from 2002 to 2006. Syler stayed busy after leaving The Early Show in 2006, hosting a health-themed pilot for Fox and Telepicture’s Mom Logic pilot.
In August 2010, she appeared as a guest on The Joy Behar Show on HLN. Syler belongs to the National Association of Black Journalists. She won the 2004 Gracie Allen Award for Individual Achievement in the National Best Anchor category for her breast cancer series. She was also named one of twelve Outstanding Women in Marketing and Communications by Ebony Magazine in 2005. In 1997, she was named Television Personality of the Year by the American Women in Radio and Television. Syler began hosting Sweet Retreats on the Live Well Network in early 2013. The series is intended to assist travelers in locating ideal family vacation getaway locations. The first episode of the series aired on Sunday, January 20, 2013. She is co-chair of the Komen Foundation’s Circle of Promise and works to empower Black women to be more vocal about the subject of breast cancer.
