Ren Zhiqiang Family
He is the son of Ren Quansheng and Li Xiuheng. He has a brother Ren Zhigang. His father, Ren Quansheng, was China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, and his mother was a Beijing municipal official. Ren’s parents were persecuted during the Cultural Revolution, so he moved to Yan’an in 1968 to work as a sent-down youth.

Ren criticized Xi Jinping’s speech on the coronavirus pandemic in a February 2020 essay, saying he “…saw not an emperor standing there exhibiting his ‘new clothes,’ but a clown stripped naked who insisted on continuing to be emperor.” He claimed that a lack of free press and freedom of expression had slowed the government’s response to the pandemic, worsening its impact. On March 12, he vanished.
The CCP Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced on April 7, 2020, that Ren was being investigated for alleged “serious violations of law and discipline.” He was expelled from the Chinese Communist Party on July 23, 2020, paving the way for his criminal prosecution. Ren was sentenced to 18 years in prison on corruption charges by a Chinese court on September 22, 2020, following a one-day trial.

Zhengfei is a vocal opponent of China’s Communist Party and government policies. Ren has been dubbed “China’s Donald Trump,” and in 2010, a shoe was thrown at him. He openly questioned Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping’s belief that the government media should follow the Party line. Ren was accused of advocating the overthrow of the Communist Party by state-affiliated media in February 2016.

In 2014, he resigned as CEO of the property company. Ren resigned from the army in 1981 to become the deputy general manager of Beijing Yida. He began working as a department head for Beijing Huayuan Group Corporation in 1984. He was imprisoned in September 1985 but released 14 months later after being found not guilty of any crime. According to a long-time colleague, he was imprisoned because he had offended the head of Beijing’s Xicheng District’s audit department. Ren joined Huayuan Corporation in 1988 as a vice president and was named President in 1993. In 2004, he was appointed Director of the Bank of Beijing Co., Ltd., and in 2007, he was appointed Chairman of Beijing Huayuan Property Co., Ltd. He has a Master of Laws degree from China’s Renmin University. He was a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference’s Beijing Municipal Committee until 2013.
