Queen Latifah U.N.I.T.Y.

Her song U.N.I.T.Y. if from third studio album, Black Reign (1993). The single was released on November 9, 1993, in the United States and January 6, 1994, in the United Kingdom. “U.N.I.T.Y.” aimed to address societal disdain for women, including street harassment, domestic violence, and slurs against women in hip-hop culture. Tenor Saw’s “Unity” is interpolated into the song’s chorus.

Because of its message, many radio and television stations would broadcast the song without censoring the terms “bitch” and “hoes,” which feature frequently in the lyrics, particularly the chorus and the phrase “who you callin’ a bitch?!” at the end of each verse. “Message from the Inner City” by the Crusaders, a Houston-based jazz group, is sampled in the song. The song was also featured on Latifah’s series, Living Single, which premiered the same year.

There is a second version of the song that garnered radio called “U.N.I.T.Y. (Queen Ruff Neck Boot)”. The second version shares the album version’s tempo, but replaces majority of the jazz sample with a hip-hop beat.
