Phillip Adams Political views

Robert Adams has been referred to as “the emblematic figurehead of the pro-Labor left intelligentsia” by Robert Manne. Adams was a long-time member of the Australian Labor Party and had a close relationship with each Labor leader, from Kevin Rudd to Gough Whitlam. Adams resigned from the Labor Party in 2010 because he was dissatisfied with Julia Gillard’s decision to fire Rudd during the Labor leadership spill of that year. The Green Left Week by week portrayed Adams as “unrepentantly left-wing, despite the fact that he has not totally deserted the dead cadaver of the Snow capped mountain that he had carried around for a really long time”. In 1995, Adams opposed Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act of 1975, arguing that “public debate, not legal censure” was a better response to racial hatred.

Adams referred to Liberal Prime Minister John Howard as “far and away the worst prime minister in living memory” during the Howard administration. Adams tweeted in 2022 that Australian cricketer Donald Bradman was a “right wing nut job” for writing a letter to criticize socialism.

Adams was accused of using a racist and derogatory term in his answer to Kamahl, a Malaysian-born Australian singer whom he called a “honorary white” on Twitter. Adams was alluding to false accusations that Bradman declined to meet with Mandela because of political and racial disagreements. Kamahl refuted this, writing to Anderson to inform him that he had not received any correspondence from Adams. Anderson responded by requesting Kamahl to accept his “sincere apologies” after being informed that an apology had been sent, but he had now asked Adams to send his apologies to him directly. Adams responded by writing Kamahl an email.
