In addition to his current station, Payton works as a meteorologist for WXXV-TV in Gulfport. He began working at WXXV-TV in May of 2017. Payton works at the station as an On-Air Meteorologist, Digital Producer, and MMJ. In addition to dealing with the weather, Payton spends a lot of his free time in the kitchen baking. In addition, he is a coffee aficionado. Payton is always on the search for the best coffee in New Orleans.
He determined at the tender age of six that he wanted to be a meteorologist. Payton recalls being a child who was addicted to television. He was often worried about the weather prediction. Payton was terrified of t-storms, and he believes his fear turned into an obsession. Payton, a native of Tornado Alley, just a few hours northwest of Dallas in the small northwest Texas town of Archer City, worked very hard to make his goal come true. Payton traveled to Norman, Oklahoma after leaving Archer City. He studied meteorology and geography at the University of Oklahoma before graduating in 2017. He’s no stranger to the wrath of the weather in Southeast Louisiana. Payton worked as a meteorologist on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for two years and five months before joining WWL-TV. He covered numerous tornadoes, tropical storms, a hurricane, and a few winter weather events while there.
Payton’s stay on the Gulf Coast introduced him to a new fascination in his meteorological world: the tropics. Nate was his first hurricane. After spending a few years on the Gulf Coast, Payton learned that tropical forecasting is his true calling. He is currently ecstatic to be able to continue honing his tropical forecasting talents in Southeast Louisiana.
