Berry was the senior anchor for WJLA-TV’s newscasts at 5, 6, and 11 p.m. in Washington, D.C. He joined WJLA in 1972 after four years as an anchor/reporter at the ABC-owned WXYZ-TV in his hometown of Detroit. Berry previously attended the Department of Defense Information School and worked as a Program Director and Sportscaster for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS) at Tuy Hoa Air Force Base in Vietnam. Berry established South Vietnam’s first independent FM radio station while on assignment. Berry is well-known in the Washington, D.C., area for founding two WJLA/community service programs, “Crimesolvers” and “Seven on Your Side.”
Berry has been honored numerous times over the years for his tireless work and dedication to the community. Berry was named unanimous winner of the Ted Yates award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1982, which is given to the individual who demonstrates outstanding professional and personal qualities in their contribution to Washington television news and public affairs. Berry is involved in the community and is a member of several civic, charitable, and professional organizations. He is a member of Ford’s Theatre’s Board of Trustees, as well as several other boards of directors, including The Neediest Kids, Inc., The Washington Jesuit Academy, and the Paul Berry Academic Scholarship Foundation, which provides private school education to 50 academically deserving minority high school students.
He is a past president of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Chesapeake Chapter and currently serves as a commissioner for Maryland Public Television. Berry left the news desk on May 26, 1999, to pursue a career in consulting and radio, and he hosted The Paul Berry Show in Washington, D.C. for several years. He currently hosts Home & Family Finance Radio, a nationally syndicated weekly radio talk show sponsored by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). The show airs on Radio America on Sundays at 3 p.m. Eastern. Berry is also a licensed realtor in Maryland and the owner of Paul L. Berry & Associates, LLC, a media company.
