From 1990 to 1992, Whitesell worked at InterTalent. From 1992 to 1995, he worked as an agent for United Talent Agency (UTA). From 1995 to 2001, Whitesell was the head of Creative Artists Agency’s (CAA) talent department.

Whitesell began his professional career as a mail clerk at InterTalent, a talent agency. During his two years with InterTalent, he worked his way up from the mail room to an agency position, and then became an agent at United Talent Agency. He left United after two years to join Creative Artists Agency, where he stayed for the next five years. He progressed from agent to head of the talent department at Creative Artists. Patrick joined Endeavor Talent Agency in 2001.

He would later play a key role in the successful merger of the agency with the William Morris Agency. For a time, he shared the role of CEO with Ari Emanuel.
