He earned a BA with honors in politics from Victoria University of Wellington, which he chose since it was close to Parliament. He became active in Salient magazine while attending Victoria University. He studied journalism at Auckland University of Technology after finishing his politics degree.

Gower broke the scoop on a leaked draft script of the controversial They Are Us film, which was based on the Christchurch mosque shootings, in July 2021. Members of the New Zealand Muslim community, as well as several politicians, including National Party leader Simon Bridges, ACT Party David Seymour, and former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, criticized the proposed script for depicting graphic violence, exploitation of the tragedy for commercial gain, and historical inaccuracies of the events surrounding the mosque shootings. Gower was moved by the storyline and asked the film’s director and writer, Andrew Niccol, to step down from the project.

Before the 2020 New Zealand cannabis vote, Gower appeared in a two-part documentary series Patrick Gower: On Weed, in which he addressed topics relating to medicinal and recreational cannabis. The documentary was shot in New Zealand and the United States and was produced by Three and funded by NZ on Air. In September 2020, a final third episode was released in ahead of the vote, which had been postponed owing to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Gower began his news-casting profession working the third shift (6pm-1:30am) at The New Zealand Envoy, later becoming one of the paper’s two police columnists. He accordingly moved to the UK and worked at Jane’s Police Survey. When back in New Zealand he worked again at the Envoy, covering governmental issues and working under Audrey Youthful.

Later he took action to TV news coverage and started working at 3 News, where he was at first a political journalist. He took over as political proofreader of 3 News from Duncan Collect in November 2012. In 2018, following five years as Newshub’s political proofreader, he moved jobs to turn into its public reporter.
